Something that Matters takes a raw, firsthand look at the ever-present crisis of poaching and corruption, which threatens extinction to the entire Rhino species. This threat is imminent. The film addresses the need for education amongst the villagers and the youth while letting us into the lives of a few brave individuals making a difference and trying to make a positive change.
In January 2013, on a Safari in South Africa, Lyon befriended a charismatic bushman named Fritz Breytenbach who changed his life. From this meeting, Fritz and Lyon embarked on a 1000 km trek on foot across South Africa for the sole purpose...to raise awareness of the senseless slaughter of the African rhino. To complete the mission Lyon put together a skeleton film crew and the makings of a documentary was born. Through the bush and villages after almost 4 months and a few pairs of boots, the 1000k goal was reached. This film chronicles that journey.
Ninety percent of poached horns end up in Asia followed by the US. Due to the progressively stable economic conditions in Asian countries, the ever-growing middle class increasingly demands rhino horn simply as a means to showcase their new found wealth and prosperity.
